Overview

La Cueva de Los Friends, tucked away on US-29 in Pelzer, South Carolina, offers an authentic Mexican dining experience that feels like stepping into your abuela’s kitchen. This cozy spot balances tradition and comfort, delivering a menu that highlights classic dishes crafted with care and skill.

The heart of the menu lies in its robust carnitas and the crispy, golden chicken chimichanga. Their ACV steak and shrimp bring a surf-and-turf delight, while the beef nachos and Taco la Cueva satisfy cravings for rich, layered flavors. These dishes showcase a genuine Mexican touch, reinforced by fresh-made tortillas and a vibrant salsa bar filled with habanero and chile de árbol options—favorites among locals and visitors alike.

Weekend specialties elevate the experience with the Quesadilla Azul—blue corn tortillas stuffed with your choice of tender steak, chipotle chicken, or marinated pork—and hearty Texan and Taco salads that combine grilled meats, fresh vegetables, cheeses, and guacamole with a refreshing balance. The dessert offerings, like the Sopapilla and Fried Ice Cream, add a sweet finish to a thoughtfully curated menu.

Despite its unassuming exterior, the ambiance inside is warm and inviting, reminiscent of a home-cooked family meal. Service consistently earns praise for being friendly and attentive, enhancing the overall appeal for regular guests and newcomers seeking authenticity beyond the typical Americanized fare. The modest space caters well to individuals and families looking for a genuine taste of Mexican cuisine, served in a welcoming atmosphere.

While some dishes like the carne asada tacos may leave room for seasoning improvements, the quality of ingredients and authenticity resonate strongly throughout the menu. Additions such as radishes and roasted peppers at the salsa bar could further heighten the experience. Still, the restaurant's charm lies in its honest approach to sharing traditional flavors and hearty meals that feel personal and satisfying.

La Cueva de Los Friends is the kind of place where returning customers feel like friends welcomed back for another hearty meal—whether you’re a local or passing through South Carolina’s Upstate region. For those craving genuine Mexican dishes made with care, this spot is a dependable refuge.

Best thing we ate was chili relleno with cheese (super good) red enchilada and tacos are good also. They didn't have a combo plate but made one just like we wanted. That was So Nice and our waitress was Great! Thanks for the great meal.

Living close to the border, its hard finding mexican food that isnt americanized. This place is legit. Salsa bar was full of fresh salsa, habanero was my favorite, chile de arbol was the wifes. Very Authentic, delicious. Great fast service and very friendly. The outside look a touch sketchy but don't let that stop you from enjoying this wonderful place. Chips are warm, tortillas are fresh made and the salsa bar has lots to choose from

Tacos de asada. Not the best. Not the worst. Got the job done. Tortillas excellent quality, didn't fall apart. Meat little tough and not well seasoned. Would I eat there again ? Probably. What would I do to make it better ? Radishes and roasted peppers on the salsa bar. Maybe some Mexican music on the speakers, like Yahritza Y Su Esencia.

A small restaurant off the side of the road. Has a salsa bar. Nice quiet setting. Friendly staff. Salsa is pretty bland as was the food. Fresh, warm tortillas, quick service at first, then they seem to forget about you.
